About the F chords on guitar
All chords on this page share the root F. The plainest of them is F major, built from F–A–C; D minor is its relative minor key.
F appears in C major (IV), F major (I), B flat major (V), A minor (VI).
Triads are three-note chords, the backbone of most songs. The F triads are F (F–A–C), Fm (F–A♭–C), F5 (F–C), Fdim (F–A♭–C♭), Faug (F–A–C♯).
Seventh chords add a fourth note, a seventh above the root, for a richer or more tense sound: F7 (F–A–C–E♭), Fmaj7 (F–A–C–E), Fm7 (F–A♭–C–E♭), Fdim7 (F–A♭–C♭–E𝄫), Fm7♭5 (F–A♭–C♭–E♭), Fm(maj7) (F–A♭–C–E), Faug7 (F–A–C♯–E♭).
Extended and added-note chords stack a sixth, ninth, eleventh or thirteenth on top. On F: Fadd9 (F–A–C–G), Fm(add9) (F–A♭–C–G), F6 (F–A–C–D), Fm6 (F–A♭–C–D), F9 (F–A–C–E♭–G), Fm9 (F–A♭–C–E♭–G), Fmaj9 (F–A–C–E–G), F11 (F–A–C–E♭–G–B♭), F13 (F–A–C–E♭–G–D), F7♯9 (F–A–C–E♭–G♯), F7♭9 (F–A–C–E♭–G♭), F6/9 (F–A–C–D–G), Fadd11 (F–A–C–B♭).
Suspended chords replace the third with a second or fourth, so they sound open and unresolved: Fsus2 (F–G–C), Fsus4 (F–B♭–C), F7sus4 (F–B♭–C–E♭), F9sus4 (F–B♭–C–E♭–G).
On guitar, many F chords can be played as an open shape or as a barre chord higher up the neck. The diagrams show the most comfortable shape; each chord page has several more, a capo option and strumming patterns.
Chords marked "diagram only" are less common and do not have their own page yet; the diagram and the notes above are all you need to play them.
