Metronome
Tap Start or press Space. Set the tempo with the + and − buttons, the arrow keys or by tapping a beat.
Metronome at a set tempo
A metronome that keeps perfect time
Every click is placed on the audio clock in advance, counted from the start rather than added up beat by beat, so the tempo does not drift even after an hour of practice. Clicks keep going when you switch tabs, and the screen stays awake while it plays.
How to practise with a metronome
Start slower than you think you need: a tempo at which you can play the passage cleanly three times in a row. Then raise it by 4 to 8 BPM at a time. If you make a mistake, step back. Accents on beat one help you feel the bar; subdivisions (eighths, triplets, sixteenths) keep your fast notes even.
Tempo markings
The Italian terms below are conventional and their ranges overlap; treat the numbers as a guide, not a rule.
| Marking | BPM | ms per beat |
|---|---|---|
| Grave | 40 | 1500 |
| Larghetto | 60 | 1000 |
| Adagio | 72 | 833 |
| Andante | 90 | 667 |
| Moderato | 110 | 545 |
| Allegro | 130 | 462 |
| Vivace | 170 | 353 |
| Presto | 190 | 316 |
