From standard tuning to Open D
- Lower string 6 from E₂ to D₂: a whole step down.
- Lower string 3 from G₃ to F♯₃: a half step down.
- Lower string 2 from B₃ to A₃: a whole step down.
- Lower string 1 from E₄ to D₄: a whole step down.
- Leave strings 5, 4 as they are.
- Check every string once more with the tuner: changing the tension of some strings pulls the others slightly.
About Open D
Open D makes the open strings ring as a D major chord: D A D F♯ A D. It has a full, resonant sound because the lowest and highest strings are both D, with the chord tones in between. Folk, blues and slide players love it, and it is a good first open tuning for fingerstyle. To get there from standard, lower the 6th, 2nd and 1st strings a whole step and the 3rd string a half step; the A and D strings stay where they are.
Tuning tips
Strings need a little time to settle into Open D. Tune every string once, play for a minute, then tune them all again: the second pass is usually only a few cents and holds much longer.
Use Auto mode: the tuner already knows the notes of Open D and picks the nearest string. If a string is far off, tap its chip to lock it in Manual mode, then turn the peg until the needle centres.
