From standard tuning to Open G

  1. Lower string 6 from E₂ to D₂: a whole step down.
  2. Lower string 5 from A₂ to G₂: a whole step down.
  3. Lower string 1 from E₄ to D₄: a whole step down.
  4. Leave strings 4, 3, 2 as they are.
  5. Check every string once more with the tuner: changing the tension of some strings pulls the others slightly.

About Open G

Open G tunes the guitar so that the open strings sound a G major chord: D G D G B D. Any straight bar across one fret then gives a major chord, which makes it the favourite tuning for slide guitar and for the rhythm-guitar style heard in many classic rock songs (often with the 6th string removed). Only three strings change from standard: the 6th, 5th and 1st are each lowered a whole step, from E A E to D G D.

Tuning tips

Strings need a little time to settle into Open G. Tune every string once, play for a minute, then tune them all again: the second pass is usually only a few cents and holds much longer.

Use Auto mode: the tuner already knows the notes of Open G and picks the nearest string. If a string is far off, tap its chip to lock it in Manual mode, then turn the peg until the needle centres.
